Can you introduce yourself and your role at Siegwerk?
My name is Mia Fuß and I'm in my second year of an apprenticeship as an Industrial Mechanic at Siegwerk.
What have you done before? How did you get to the job you have today?
I was at school before the apprenticeship and graduated from secondary school after year 10 in 2023. During my time at school, I did various internships in different professions. But none of them appealed to me.
What inspired you to pursue a career in the printing industry?
I've always been interested in technology and manual work, so I just wanted to try out whether this career choice was really something for me.
A friend of my father's works at Siegwerk and he sent me job advertisements for apprenticeships at Siegwerk. The industrial mechanic appealed to me the most.
I particularly liked the atmosphere within the team here (it can also be very rough in the workshop, but I can handle that well - it didn't bother me). I learn a wide range of tasks in different departments and played a key role in the smooth running of production processes. As a result, I get to see a lot more and, above all, learn more.
What’s one leadership lesson you wish you had learned earlier?
It's okay to make mistakes.
Who has been your biggest mentor or role model in your career?
My biggest mentor would be Norbert Wosch, the Foreman of the mechanical workshop at Siegwerk’s Siegburg site. I've have worked most closely with him, so far.
How do you balance leadership and personal life (like parenthood, friends and family, hobbies, self-care, etc.)?
I do sports, meet up with friends or go for a drive with my brother. I also spend a lot of time with my family so that I can get away from work and switch my head off.
What do you hope future generations of women in your industry won’t have to experience?
That women are not discriminated against and are not disadvantaged because they are supposedly less powerful. They should also be confident and not be afraid to make mistakes or come into contact with so many men.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice as a woman, what would that be?
You can be very proud of how far you've already come. You will surpass yourself and also be able to communicate much better with people.
