Exciting experiments for young Siegwerkers: provided insights into the science of printing inks

Germany

Due to the success of the project “workshops for daycare and schools on circular economy”, Siegwerkers visited children at the Veronika Keller Kinderburg daycare to give the children a first-hand insight into the company's scientific work by means of a sustainability training course.

The fun approach to learning proved successful with the youngsters. Pre-school children from the daycare centres ‘Veronika Keller’ and ‘Die kleinen Strolche’, of the Siegburg Rhein-Sieg youth disability service were recruited as new Siegwerkers.

In three one-hour workshops, the kids quickly felt like real Siegwerk employees. After a welcoming address by employees, the youngsters were registered then introduced to their new ‘jobs.’ The Siegwerk experts explained the various packaging types and their differences. The youngsters were amazed to learn that Siegwerk products even find their way to India. The ‘scientific’ experiments, on the other hand, turned out to be exciting highlights. The children had their first experience with the shrink sleeve process. Here they cut out foil in the size of labels, which they then heated onto bottles they had brought with them.

The kids saw how the foil shrinked around the bottles. The children worked in teams of two and completed the task with great skill. The presentation of the ‘de-inking’ process was a dramatic contrast. Here, Ingmar Bohnert, Sales Manager Inkjet presented a method for removing color from film for reuse. The children saw how recycling works in everyday life. In addition, the young people were given a clear explanation of how separating waste correctly helps the recycling process.

The sustainability training was well received by the ‘little Siegwerkers’ and the daycare staff. This program is planned for other daycare centers and schools in 2025.
