Siegburg students champion environmental protection

The annual restocking of salmon is part of the migratory fish program of the Stiftung Wasserlauf (Watercourse Foundation), which aims to re-establish migratory fish like salmon in native waters. Siegwerk has been a sponsor of the Stiftung Wasserlauf's salmon sponsorship program for several years now.

As part of a local student program, students from several schools had the opportunity to survey the water, catch fish with dip nets and complete questionnaires on the salmon life cycle. "It's wonderful to see how enthusiastic the children are about the life cycle of the salmon in the Sieg river. The salmon restocking campaign gives students the opportunity to experience nature up close and raises their awareness of water protection," said Nikole Peters, Manager Corporate Communications & CSR.

Salmon fall victim to heat
Sadly, this initiative was dealt a major blow when the salmon fingerlings arrived, which the students were due to release into the Sieg. Many of the young fish had perished in the vats on the banks of the Sieg and the campaign had to be called off. However, despite their dismay, the children focused on identifying what had caused this, and concluded that the heat was to blame. In the future, initiatives such as this will no longer take place during periods of such high temperatures.
